Barcelona Bound!

From 12th January 2011 until 25th June 2011 I will be working at La Escolania de Montserrat, outside Barcelona, as a Gap student.

Some of you may not know where or what this place is. The Escolania of Montserrat is a school and choir reputed to be amongst the best treble-only in the world. It is formed of trebles , mainly from the Spanish region of Catalunya, in North-East Spain. The trebles study in one of the very few boarding schools in Spain, the Escolania of Montserrat (Schola or school in Latin).

The school only has around 50 pupils and is situated in the Monistrol de Montserrat (Mountain of Montserrat). Montserrat is the Catalan for jagged mountain, as you can see from the pictures below:

Montserrat has some of the greatest views in Spain. The 13th century abbey, as well as the school, are situated at the top of the mountain. Montserrat Abbey is an important pilgrimage site, with one of the Black Madonnas enshrined here. Apparently the Holy Grail is buried somewhere inside this mountain, and the abbey choir is supposedly the oldest in Europe.
I'm not even at the packing stage yet, so don't expect another post before the 12th! If any of you would like to find out any more information about the area or the abbey and school please let me know!
