Teaching English (And Rugby) to Spanish Choirboys (Monday 17th January 2011)

Yes, I am now also coaching the younger choir boys to do rugby! This might sound ironic in itself, as I have not played rugby for the last four years and I have no intention of becoming a professional rugby coach in the near (or distant) future. However, what is even more incomprehensible right now is that these boys, who are part of Spain’s (and possibly Europe’s) oldest choir and who are not the stereotypical rugby players we think of, seemed to emanate even more adrenaline than a herd of bulls. These boys go from being saints in the church to fiery machines on the pitch ten minutes after a service. One can almost imagine a crowd of small people in choir robes running around tackling each other whilst singing the Salve Regina!
Invariably you have the odd few who look the part more and who actually want to learn how to play, instead of simply wanting to bosh their biggest choral enemy out of their way.
The Escolania is a school which specialises in musical studies until the age of thirteen/fourteen. One of the main aims this year is to introduce some variety into the timetable by introducing games sessions and activities on Thursday afternoons, in a similar fashion to English public schools. On average they spend five hours a day practising their various instruments and their voices, but not much time is spent doing sport. So we are doing this to experiment.
